We flew out on Tuesday and after getting a nice pat down at security, (We set off the alarm with his brace) we were on the plane. Connor actually did very well on the flight. He ate on the take-off and slept on the way down. Here is a pic of him stealing Daddy's chair.

We spent Tuesday and Wednesday with Jason's Uncle Don in Littleton, going to a Colorado Rockies game on Wednesday and visiting with Grandma Rose Wednesday night. On Thursday Don took us to see Red Rocks, a natural outdoor amphitheater, and have lunch in a small town just into the mountains. It was quite a sight!

On Thursday night we drove to Ft. Collins to stay with Jason's Uncle Jim and Aunt Becky. We had dinner with their entire family. It was so fun! On Friday I did some shopping at an outlet mall with Jason's cousin Allison while Jason and Aunt Becky went to see the new Batman movie. That night we had the rehearsal dinner for the wedding on Saturday. It was great to finally see Jason's dad's side. They all oohed and ahhed over Connor of course. Who wouldn't? Saturday was the wedding. Connor was fine until the bride walked down the aisle. After that... he had enough so we snuck out to have a feeding and made it back in time for the introduction of the couple. The reception was at the Hilton in Ft. Collins and we were staying there Saturday night, which was very nice. We were able to change in more comfortable clothes later in the night. He is a family pic before we did that.

And of course... Cathy has a plastic baby pool that is just big enough to fit on her deck under the awning (so no one gets a sunburn!). Of course he's not quite big enough to sit on his own and splash around. But with the help of the Bebe Pod seat, he was able to sit in the water without Mommy's help. He mostly just leaned over and put one hand in the water and explored his toes a bit. I could tell he was tired, but there was just so much going on around him, he couldn't possibly fall asleep. But once we got to the car, he was asleep before we left the parking garage. We headed south today to Terre Haute to cook out at my aunt and uncle's. While the weather wasn't nearly as warm as we hoped, it didn't rain so we were at least able to grill out. Connor was of course dressed in his Fourth of July attire.

All eight of my cousins were there, my brother and sister-in-law, nieces, my mom and step-dad, my aunt, my uncle and his parents, and my grandma all made it. I love when all get together. We used to spend lots of time with my aunt, uncle, and cousins when I was little. But now that some of use are grown up we don't get to see them as much. Here is a picture of Jason with my cousin Caleb (number 6 of the 7 cousins) and my oldest niece Callie.

We came back to Lafayette in time to see the fireworks here. Connor did stay up in time to see them. Surprisingly, he wasn't startled by them. He did watch them, but then again, he also watched the headlights of the cars passing by on the nearby highway.

Old Friends

Last night was the best! Our good friends, Eric and Erin (whom recently moved to the far-away land of Arizona), came for a visit. They came over around 4:00 to hang out and FINALLY meet Connor. Jason got home and we grilled out. It was so fun to sit around and hang out like old times. After a lovely dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, and macaroni and cheese, we headed off for Coldstone Creamery with our coupon for a family of four. We enjoyed some ice cream then headed home. Finally, we forced Eric to hold Connor. Here is the visual proof. He's not exactly a "baby person" (as in, I don't think he's EVER held one), so convincing him he doesn't need to be "terrified" (his word, not mine) of Connor was kind of challenging.

Erin helped me give Connor a bath while the guys played the Wii. Once Connor was asleep, we played some four-player games on the Wii and just hung out. It was great to kinda put ourselves back in time. Luckily, Erin and Eric will be in Indiana for two weeks so we should have more time be with them again before they return to the far-away land of Arizona.

Workin' in the Yard

So last weekend Jason and I decided (really it was more my decision) that we would finish the landscaping we started about a month ago. See... when we bought our house late last July, we were too busy painting and doing various things on the inside to worry about the outside. The outside has been our project this spring. The flower beds in the front had rocks instead of mulch... not my favorite. So the task of taking up the rock began. Now... this would have been much easier if whomever laid the rock in the first place would have picked up the mulch rather than just lay the rock on top of it!! It was a huge mess. Plus... the rock was going to be used someplace else.. so we couldn't just shovel it all up.. we had to pick the rocks out one by one.

Connor was a HUGE help!!! I wish I could say the past year has been for myself. But unfortunately, my baby boy is the sole reason for my success. Hurting me hurts him, and I could never do anything to intentionally hurt him.

I recently finished reading Down Came the Rain by Brooke Shields and came across this quote:

Motherhood seems both selfish and selfless. She gives me purpose and makes me feel more special than I have ever felt, yet at the same time, I would die for her. As I recall the dark thoughts I had when I was really depressed and wanting to take my own life, I am moved by this distinction: I considered taking my own life, and now I would give it away if it were for her benefit.

If I could ever put into words my feelings for my baby boy and my situation... this would be pretty close. Last year was for him. This year is for me.

Contentment

I'm not sure I've ever been more content than I was last night...

After our volleyball game last night, Jason and I picked up Connor from Grandma Bernadette's and took him home for a bath. Once the bath and evening snack were through, I rocked him to sleep though it didn't take much effort. He was a tired boy! I walked into his room to lay him down and couldn't let go. I swayed back and forth with him in my arms and kissed his little forehead. He was so peaceful right then that I wanted to bottle up everything that was happening so I could have it another day. Maybe today when he's grumpy. Or in four years when he's trying my patience. How about in eighteen years when he's graduating high school. I wanted that feeling to last forever.

Bath Time!

So this actually happened about a week ago... but I haven't had a free moment to post until now....

Last Wednesday Connor got his casts off for good!!!! He said at our next appointment on Wednesday, they'll measure him for his shoes and put his LAST cast on!!! So exciting!!! So... keeping our fingers crossed, he will be done with casts and into his shoes by May 14th. And even better news... it's looking as though he won't have to have surgery.

We're sorta kinda maybe starting to get on a schedule also. Which is good... since I go back to work a week from Monday. I really am looking forward to going back. I love every minute I spend with my son... but I love teaching too. Plus, it's only for 2 and half weeks... then I have the whole summer off with him.

One Month Old!

Happy One Month Connor!

Not exactly the most flattering picture, but hey it'll do! I can't believe how much he has changed already, right before my eyes. His personality is starting to show through. Such a momma's boy! And I love the way his eyes brighten when he hears my voice. He is starting to track things with his eyes and get excited when he sees our faces. I know when I go back to work in two weeks I'll be rushing home to him... he's changing so fast I don't want to miss too much!

Sunday was an eventful day. The night before Connor was up crying most of the night... which means mommy and daddy were up all night too. Jason discovered Sunday morning that his casts were making welts on the inside of his little baby thighs. Seriously.. there was a raised bright red mark! They did not put enought cotton wrap around the top of them, so the molding was causing him lots of pain. Jason called St. Vincent's right away because we don't go to the doctor until Wednesday and he was just miserable. The doctor oncall suggested taking him to the emergency room to have them cut part of the cast off or try to put more cotton around them. So... that's where we headed. We had them cut about 1 inch off the top and put some cotton around the jagged parts. So far... we have been a MUCH happier guy.

And so the long line of rough patches continues for us....

What will it be next week?

Adjusting to Mommyhood...

Ok... so I know everyone has been expecting an update of some kind. But its been just crazy around here! Just when we think everyone has adjusted to everyone else... things go haywire.

First... About two weeks ago, Cathy and David had the three of us over for dinner. Cathy asked what I wanted for dinner and, I requested chicken parmesan. So we had a fantastic dinner of chicken parmesan, spaghetti, salad, and broccoli. That night... Connor was not a happy guy. Apparently, garlic and broccoli are not two of his favorite things.

Then... only two days later, he is upset again. Thankfully, Cathy offered to have us stay overnight and keep Connor downstairs in her room. In the morning, she had determined that we were over feeding Connor. All I knew was that in the hospital, they told me to have him eat 10 minutes on each side. Well... when I pumped I had 4 ounces from each side. This means that my 2 week old baby was eating about 8 ounces at each feeding! So that problem is now fixed... he eats on one side and I pump the other.

Finally... Last week... He would eat, fall asleep, then we would put him in bed. No more than 5 minutes later, he was screaming. I would get up, rock him back to sleep, and then try to lay him down again. This would repeat itself over and over again. Finally, I just resorted to sleeping in the recliner with him (a big no no.. I know). Luckily, we only had to do this for a couple days because we had our 2 week check up with the pediatrician. She suspected that he had infant reflux and said to prop him up after feedings and to try the Mylicon gas drops. So we did that for about a week.. with minimal results. So last Friday, the doctor called in a prescription for baby Zantac. As of Sunday night... things have been magical!!!

Obviously, we've been very busy, tired, stressed (among other things). And we've had all this going on while dealing with going to the doctor in Indy for his feet. Tomorrow will be his third set of casts. So far, it's looking very good. The doctor said from the very beginning that he had a rather mild case. It was still very hard for me to see him get that first set of casts on. There my precious baby was, 10 days old, getting his legs casted. He was a trooper though!! Connor just laid there, calm as can be, holding on to Daddy's fingers.

Ahhh... more later

I'm crazy about you...

Connor Scott Lange
March 28, 2008
12:25pm
9 pounds 4 ounces
21 inches

Enough is Enough

I know that technically I still have 2 weeks and 2 days left until my due date, but enough is enough already. This last month has been more miserable than I expected. I don't like feeling like this. All in all, I've had an okay pregnancy, but I want my little boy here! For many reasons...

None of my clothes fit. Especially now that it's getting warmer out (slowly, but surely here in Indiana), I'm envious of spring clothes.

I'm uncomfortable 24 hours a day. I'm very uncomfortable and things are beginning not to fit anymore. I'm still up every 2 hours to go to the bathroom, and by the end of the day, my ribs really, really hurt. I'm soooo ready for him to get here! Of course I'm excited to see his little face for the first time, but also my body needs some relief. Went to the doctor today and had another ultrasound. Care to guess? My little guy is 7 pounds 6 ounces. The doctor told me I'm having a small cow.

Am I nervous about going into labor? Surprisingly, no. But I think that is due to the fact that I have no idea what to expect, and I want to keep it that way. That way, I don't worry 24 hours a day until he gets here. Plus, I think I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.

Here are some pictures of his finished room...

Another teacher at school found a big book of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in her room, so I cut some pages out of it and bought some frames and volia... there are our wall hangings. We met with Dr. Kayes at the Pediatric Rehab Center. It was a lot of information in a short amount of time. But, here is the timeline. Basically, right after we are home from the hospital, we are to call Dr. Kayes' office and they will see him within a week after he is born. At that point, he will be put in his first of 5-8 casts. The casts are changed every week... that's an hour drive to Indy once a week. After the casts, they will most likely cut his Achilles Tendon in order to move his foot "up and down" to the right place and then cast it for 3 weeks. Finally, they will take that cast off and he will be given special shoes to wear with a bar connecting his feet. He will have to wear this full time for 2-3 months, then a night and naptime for another 2-4 years. Here is a link with some information about the process.

http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/medicaldepartments/orthopaedics/clubfeet/parents.html

I suppose I have to be okay with all of this. I've been able to put the entire issue out of my mind until recently. Now it's real. I know he will eventually be okay. I know he won't remember it. I know that of all things that could go wrong, this is the most favorable. I know I'm lucky to even have him. But sometimes I just want to be angry. Angry that I can't give him a bath until he is 2 months old. Or buy him shoes until he is at least 6 months old. I'm angry that impromptu pictures will include his brace in them. And that all the pants and sleepers he has right now will most likely not fit over his casts.

I'm anxious for him to arrive. Because then, my anger will be replaced with nothing but love and protection for my the other love of my life.

CANKLES!

Yes... that's right. I called the doctor last Friday (They were really bad then), and she said to lay on my side as much as possible and drink lots of fluids. Well, first of all, it is impossible to lay down during the day. So I try and sit if I can. Plus, I already drink TONS of water! They've been better this week. I think my cankles are very tired. It's been a long week! It's the first week in TWO months that we've been to school all week and on time.

Other excitement this weekend was my first baby shower in Terre Haute. Jason and I just got back from a doctor appointment. We also had an another ultrasound on the little guy. Everything looks pretty much the same as it did during the first one. We still have a boy, and there are still going to be some cosmetic problems with his feet. But the big news his his weight. Keep in mind I still have 7 week to go. Right now he is 5 lbs. 11 oz. That's the size of a full term baby! No wonder I feel so uncomfortable. My doctor wants another ultrasound in 3-4 weeks and then "we'll talk" she says.

I'm rather nervous about having a cesarean delivery. I've never so much as had stitches... let alone a surgery! I suppose we'll wait and see how big he is in a few weeks before getting really nervous.

Belly Pic #6

Does this look uncomfortable? Does it look like I might have trouble sleeping? The answer to both of those questions is YES!

My back hurts, my sides hurt, my ribs hurt, and I can't bend down to tie my shoes... thank goodness its less than two months to go! Although through all of this... I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm so thankful for my little boy and for my husband who is trying to make things comfortable for me. EVERY time I sit/stand up and I'm near him... his hand always reaches out to help me up. And he ties my shoes for me :) I'm so blessed.

Next doctor appointment is Monday. I'm having another ultrasound, so I get to see the little guy again! My doctor wants to "make sure he's growing okay." HELLO! Look at me! Growth is not a problem... but no complaints here. We can triple check for pink or blue this way.

A small part of me doesn't want this ultrasound. I still have hope that this time they won't find anything wrong with his feet. And if they do... I'll be disappointed all over again. Then there's the other fear that they will find something else to be concerned about. Here is the room in process:

Also last week, Jason started to put together the crib. This project was started Monday night as we watched the BCS championship game in the living room. Luckily, Jason realized before it was too late that it HAD to be put together in Connor's room because it wouldn't fit down the hallway. Here is my love hard at work!

Wrigley liked playing in the bubble wrap! Hershey was content just laying to the side... she's not as nosey.

We did get things finished today. Here is what we have so far:

Hopefully the border will be here soon. I also found an Eric Carle crib set on ebay that I have my eye on. Wish me luck with bidding... it ends on Monday. My glider is waiting on a part from the company (it was damaged), and we still need to buy a dresser. But things are coming right along!

Belly Pic #5

Here we are! Yes, I'm feeling more ginormous by the day. I feel so huge, but I know it's only going to be worse from here on out. Today marks the start of my third trimester :) YAY!! I just can't wait for this little guy to get here.

Tomorrow I will be enjoying a pregnancy massage at a spa here in Lafayette thanks to Cathy :) My ribs are still causing a lot of pain. But on the bright side, according to the doctor, they won't go back to the way they were before. So... when we decide to have #2, it won't be nearly as painful! Speaking of the doctor... I will start seeing her every two weeks now. Nervousness about the actual labor has not set in... yet. I'm sure it will though. Goodness knows I'm nervous about everything else :)

What else is new?

** Enjoying the last few days of winter break! It has been a very relaxing one. I've done NOTHING to do with school, and plan to keep it that way until Monday. We had an enjoyable holiday and were able to see a lot of family and friends.

** So... I'm trying my hand at sewing. Jason wanted new stockings with our names on them, so I found three different kits at Hobby Lobby. Jason's is done! I was very intimidated at first, but it turned out to be easier than I thought, though VERY time consuming. I've just started to work on Connor's. Although, there is no name going on this one until we have a baby... just in case :)

** Lastly... trying to "encourge" (nag) Jason to start working on Connor's room. If we can just get it painted and the border hung, then I can go to work on the rest. I'm so anxious!!!!

Belly Pic #4

Yep! Here we are! I can't believe the difference in the last two pictures!!!!! He is huge! How am I feeling? I would love to remove about 4 ribs to make more room for him. Seriously... they hurt so bad! I was almost in tears last night trying to fall asleep. I'm okay until about lunch time, but after that I'm not longer comfortable. But it will be worth it!

Had another doctor's appointment last Thursday. Everything is looking good, just had a quick check at all my measurements. At my next appt. they will check me for gestational diabetes, which is a routine check. Connor is moving more and more each day! Finally, on Thanksgiving, Jason felt him move. It's one of my favorite memories so far. We were cuddling on the couch together, not really motivated to get up and start getting ready for the day. I mentioned that he was pretty active, so Jason laid his hand on my belly. Once he felt him move, Jason's eyes lit up like I had never seen them before. I could tell it was a very exciting moment for him. He is going to be a great daddy!!!!

What else is new?

**I've been trying to finish up my final exam paper for the graduate class I'm taking at Purdue. It's all I've done all week... which is why the belly picture is late! Less than a week to go and the class is over!

**Went to Wisconsin over the weekend to see Jared play football in 4 inches of snow.

**School, school, and more school. Which isn't really new I guess... but I definitely feel myself getting into more of a routine than I have in the past.

Just an update...

So Jason and I went to see the high-risk OB yesterday in Indy. I had another ultrasound and talked with a genetic counselor. The ultrasound brought very good news... neither the technician or the doctor saw any reason to be concerned about the liver. VERY good news! They said that if the liver was in fact enlarged, then it only makes sense that his abdomen be enlarged too, and its not. As for the feet, they are fairly certain that my little guy will have club feet. BUT, the good news there is that he might not necessarily need surgery. It could be corrected with a series of castings to move the feet into a more natural place. If that does not correct it, then he will need surgery. But it would be minor and he would likely not know what was going on. The important thing is to get it corrected before he becomes mobile. The genetic counselor we spoke with was very knowledgeable and is able to put us in contact with orthopedic people at St. Vincent children's hospital now, so that we can go over things and get a plan together before Connor makes his entrance into the world.

While I was rather ecstatic that nothing seems to be wrong with his liver, I was still disappointed about the feet. Every mother wants their baby to be perfect right? I realize that this is a very common birth defect, but my mind still wanders into "it's just not fair mode." This is something that Connor will have to overcome, just like I had things to challenge me. I know that I have done everything right in this pregnancy (aside from slacking on exercising like I should), and this is out of my control. Wow! That was a big one for me to admit. We just deal with it, and move on.

And by the way... it is DEFINITELY a boy. Little stinker wouldn't show his face, but boy was he proud of those manparts.

It's a....

BOY!

Yep.. that's right, we are unofficially having a baby boy. Obviously this isn't the picture that shows us he is a boy, but I thought everyone would enjoy the cool 4D ultrasound profile picture much more. Connor Scott will make his entry into the world sometime around March 28th.

However, not all news that came from the ultrasound was good news. The doctor has two concerns. One, she thinks the baby might be born with club foot. And two, the baby's liver is enlarged. She is sending me to a high-risk OB in Indianapolis tomorrow for another ultrasound. Hopefully, they will be able to tell me what exactly (if anything) is wrong.

I know we aren't positive something is wrong, but the waiting game is killing me. Hopefully, my doctor was just being cautious and this will turn out to be nothing at all. Until then, prayers from my baby's health and for mine and Jason's peace of mind would be appreciated.

Belly Pic #3

So here I am at 18 weeks and 5 days....

Obviously, maternity clothes are a must now! Thankfully I have at least enough dress pants to get me through a week at work now. Target is the BEST place to but them! Especially if you can get them on sale. Thursday is the big day for our grownig family. I have my first utrasound and hopefully (keep your fingers crossed!) we will be able to find if we are having a Connor or an Abby. Although, I will still be skeptical after my friend Jessica was told they were "90% sure" she was having a boy. Then 3 days before she was due, she had another ultrasound and guess what! Yep... she now has Brooklynn instead of Landon. Don't get me wrong... I truly have no preference right now. I'm welcoming fall break this year! On Friday morning I leave for Miami with some sorority sisters for a weekend cruise to the Bahamas. I am so excited I can hardly stand it! I've never been to Florida, let alone a cruise. I plan on relaxing, having a good time with my friends, and of course EATING all the wonderful food that will be at my disposal 24 hours a day :)

So tonight, Jason and I spent some quality time together since I will not see him for the next 5 days. To get into the Halloween spirit, we carved a pumpkin. Jason wanted to make it a pumpkin getting sick, and I didn't really care as long as I could bake some of the seeds when we were done. Just think, this time next year, we will have a little person to carve a pumpkin with!!! Look for pictures of the cruise and another belly picture next week!

Belly Pic #2

Okay... Okay... so I'm a day late. But I was a little busy yesterday (more on that later!).

Here it is... at 14 weeks

Still feeling pretty good. I'm not nearly as hungry as I have been, and the heartburn has been MUCH better also. Our first doc appt went well. We got to hear the heartbeat!!!! It was an indescribable feeling to hear that! The doc said I'm right where I should be, and as far as she can tell everything is going fine. We go back on Thursday, and hopefully we will know when we can have an ultrasound to find out the sex. Speaking of... Jason and I also picked out names. If we have a boy the name will be Connor Scott and for a girl it will be Abigail Catherine.

On Sunday... Jason and I went to Cincinnati to see the Cubs play the Reds. This is the third year in a row that we have been. It is such a great place for us to see them first of all because it takes about the same amount of time to get there as it does the northside of Chicago and because we can get such good seats. We sat in the SECOND row from the field, 8 seats from the Cubs' dugout and our tickets were just $65 apiece. It was amazing!!!!! I made sure we got there when the ballpark opened (we were the 10th people in our line) so that we could get some autographs. Unfortunately, not very many players were out so I only got Bob Howry's AND Kerry Wood's. Here is a pic of me with the ball.

Unfortunately the Cubs lost... but we are in the playoffs!!! The unbearable hunger has gotten a lot better. Now, that's not to say I don't eat a lot. But it's no longer paralyzing. I've been getting heartburn in the evenings, but that's been cured with some Tums and eating dinner earlier. I'm tired a lot, but it's manageable with naps to school, on the way from school, and then again once I'm home. All in all, I know I've been lucky so far. My first doctor appointment is next Friday. Details on that later!

Another change in events has been the start of school. We are ending the third week already. So far, I think this will be a pretty good group. I had 8 of the 18 kids last year. The familiarity has been nice. There are a few that will test my patience, but that's reality.

And baby makes three!

Yep... you read that right! Jason was just as excited as I was. Right now it looks as though I'll be due around the end of March. My first doctor appointment isn't until September 7th. My doctor doesn't see new OB patients until they are 10-12 weeks. I'll be most of the way through the first trimester by then!

So far the only pregnancy "symptoms" I have experienced are going to the bathroom often and being hungry EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF THE DAY! Now, I know what you are thinking. "That's okay, now you have an excuse to eat anything you want." Which would be fine with me... but the problem is, nothing sounds good. I'm always so hungry that my stomach hurts to the point that the thought of food makes me feel sick. And I am really hungry every minute of the day. I spent the majority of the day in bed either watching the Cubs or reading. I started A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown (Yes, that's her real name) a week or so ago, but yesterday I just couldn't put it down. Don't you just love books like that? And it's even better when you have the time, like yesterday, to read until your heart's content. I won't ruin the book for any of you who want to read it. And I STRONGLY suggest that you do read it. If you think you have overcome obstacles in life, you will be humbled by Cupcake's story. I surely was. This is one of my favorite quotes from the book.

"Sure folks say that family is supposed to be blood. But out of those people who were loving me, supporting me, believing in me, and encouraging me, only Jr. was actually blood. Yet, the others didn't love me any less than he did. That's when I realized that a family doesn't have to be people you're related to. Family are people who love you - whoever that may be. I warned myself not to miss my blessing of a new family just because we weren't related by blood. We were related by love."

For a long time I would swear that my family really wasn't all that important to me. Why would they be? As many times as they let me down and caused so much pain. Sure I enjoyed being around some of them, but as for my immediate family, I felt no connection to them. Things were put into perspective after reading that quote. In truth, I have a HUGE family! Way back when, it was Jennifer Abrell, my middle school counselor. She was the first person I truly opened up to. Talk about having trust in someone! Then it was Martha Toth, my high school history teacher. We still talk on the phone regularly. And Pamela... who is like a big sister to me. Cathy and David, who are my proxy parents, and I their proxy daughter. Wow, where would be without their love and support and guidance? I'm so very lucky to be surrounded by these people, (and SO many more) and my new family through marrying Jason. I even have my "school family" to get me through a challenge. Though we are not related by blood, we are related by love.

Weekend Trip

In celebration of our anniversary, Jason and I went to South Haven, Michigan for the weekend. Our friends Cathy and David suggested checking out Martha's Vineyard, a bed and breakfast. It truly was a dream come true! We stayed in the Cranston Suite. From the gardens, to the pond, to the hammock... everything was just amazing. And the weather was just gorgeous. We couldn't have asked for a better setting!

Here is a picture of the guest house from where we entered.

We started the three hour drive on Friday night after Jason got off of work. We ordered a pizza to go from a local place, Americilli's, stopped at Walgreens for some essentials, and headed back. After enjoying the pizza, we went outside to where they had a stand alone fire pit and roasted marshmallows.

Since we were staying in the "guest house," our breakfast was delivered right to our door in a picnic basket. After enjoying a breakfast of caramel apple pancakes, yogurt, grapefruit, and orange juice we showered and made our way into town. We walked down to the marina to see the lighthouse and perused some of the shops down there. We had lunch at the Harborside Bistro. Once we returned to Martha's, we napped in a hammock, then moved to the room and napped there! For dinner we ventured to Sagatuck, Michigan, 20 minutes north of South Haven. Dinner was at The Butler, and again we walked the marina and the shops. We headed back to the beach in South Haven and were just able to catch the sunset over Lake Michigan. It was absolutely beautiful!!!!

Once again we enjoyed breakfast delivered to our room. This time it was more to Jason's liking! We had roasted potatoes, a mini quiche, cinnamon rolls, and fresh watermelon and blueberries. After we checked out and left the fairy tale behind, we went into town to take picture of the lighthouse since my camera wasn't working the day before. We also went to an art fair that was going on. It was huge! And Jason was such a good sport about letting me browse. On our way back to Lafayette, we stopped at the Michigan City outlet mall. It was truly memorable, and I'm sure we will make a return trip!

My heart hurts.

It feels like part of me has been taken away from the rest of me.

I guess that's the best way for me to explain it. One of my two best friends, Erin, is moving to Arizona in less than a week. Erin and I have been friends since we were juniors in high school. One of my earliest memories of our friendship is sitting in US History class. It was then that I started dating my future husband, and I would hurry in each day to tell Erin how the relationship was going. I was so ecstatic I could barely sit in my chair the night after the first time he called me, and Erin was there to be ecstatic with me. We survived the last two years of high school with the rest of our circle of friends. Countless nights of laser tag, glow bowling, and movies at Hannah's house take me back to when everyone was within 10 minutes of each other.

Our freshman year of college Jason and I decided to introduce Erin to one of the guys Jason went to school with at Rose Hulman. We took Eric to Erin's dorm room to meet her, and although there wasn't immediate fireworks, eventually they fell in love. During our sophomore year at ISU, Erin and I roomed together. Wow. It's absolutely amazing how I could get NOTHING accomplished while studying in the room with Erin, but should I chose to move to the common area down the hall, I'm done in 5 minutes flat. So many memories from that year. Erin celebrated with me when I got my bid from Delta Gamma. Bribed me with ice cream to take cough syrup when I was sick. Let me cry on her shoulder when Jason wanted to "slow things down a bit." And it never failed... EVERY night when I got home from work at 11 exhausted from my full day, there was Erin to ask how was work. When Erin went to Spain for a semester our junior year Jason asked me to marry him. I kept it a secret from her until I arrived at the airport with Eric and her mom to pick her up. I wanted to tell her in person, and ask her to be in the wedding.

We shared history notes and friends in high school. We shared instant oatmeal and our wardrobes in college. We shared each other's wedding days.

Last night we shared tears and hugs and half of our desserts.

Suddenly we've become adults whether we want to or not.

When did this happen? Don't get me wrong... it was a blast! But it's kind of a culture shock to go from no kids to three... especially for Jason!

I drove down to Terre Haute (1 hour 45 minute drive) Thursday afternoon to pick them up. I knew I was in trouble when Callie, she's 4 by the way, asks "How long til we're there Aunt Stephanie?" I had driven about three blocks. It was then that I realized I should have taken Cathy's advice and brought along "kid music" to listen to on the drive. I would be a rich women if I had a quarter for every time I heard "Are we almost there?"

I fixed a kid-friendly meal of hot dogs, mac and cheese, and tater tots once we got home. It was then that I learned how picky of an eater Caleb (he's 6) is. His dinner consisted of a hot dog (with the ends cut off), macaroni noodles without the cheese, and a piece of string cheese. After dinner Jason and I took them to the park, then to get ice cream. Finally we stopped by Cathy's house to get some movies to watch, or more accurately, fall asleep to.

When got home and settled in and learned the DVD player didn't work in the living room where we were sleeping. Do you know how many cartoons are on at 11pm? Not very many!!!! It was tough for them to fall asleep. Finally they did about midnight. Caleb, me, and Callie (in that order) slept on the fold out couch. Callie and Caleb each had about a foot of the bed on either side of them. Which meant they were sleeping VERY close to me.

Callie woke up at 7am wanting breakfast so I fixed 3 bowls of cereal. Then she wanted to know if it was time to go. It was difficult to explain to a 4 year old that we couldn't leave because they weren't open yet. "But why?" she kept asking.

Here is a picture of them at the water park enjoying juice boxes and Cheetos!

After the water park, we headed home to change, then to McDonald's for lunch. Once we were finished, we headed back to Terre Haute, and this time I was armed with kid music! Within 20 minutes they were all sound asleep.

"I have no idea where we are..."

Not exactly the words you want to hear while in the middle of Rocky Mountain National Park! Jason and I visited his relatives in Colorado, (more about that later!) and while we were there I did a climb with Jason's Uncle Jim. We started our adventure last Saturday morning about 10:30. Like I said, we were in Rocky Mountain National Park in an area called Wild Basin. As we came to the ranger station, Jim asked the person working what would be a good, challenging climb for me, and he suggested climbing to Sandbeach Lake. So we set out for a 4.5 mile climb (that's ONE way, folks!).

Sometimes the trail looked like this

But most of the time, the trail looked like this

Some places were pretty steep, some were flat, and some had snow! For the first part of the climb we were practically walking along the side of a cliff. We crossed a couple of "rivers," they were actually more like creeks. There were a couple instances where had to veer from the trail because of either run-off or snow in the way. Finally, about 1:15 we made it to the top. We only spent about 20-25 minutes up there. Long enough to eat the small lunch Jason's mom and aunt had so caringly packed for us and to rest our legs.

Here I am at the top! (10,800 ft) It was such an incredible feeling to accomplish this!

The treck back down was tougher than I had expected it to be, though it was obviously easier than going up! We made it to the bottom in about an hour and a half. I ran straight for the glorified porta potties since we forgot to pack toilet paper, then we headed back for home.

As for the rest of our vacation, we mostly just visited with Jason's family. It was so great to see everyone! They make me feel like I've always been part of that family. We attempted to go to Trail Ridge Road (the highest, continous road in the US), but it was closed because of snow :( We wandered downtown a little bit and saw Coors Field where the Colorado Rockies play. It was a relaxing vacation, with the exception of Saturday of course.

Summer!!

Friday at 3:00pm marked the beginning of summer vacation! While I LOVE my job and all, it's always nice to have a break. Anyone who thinks teaching is an 8:00-3:30 job obviously doesn't know any teachers personally. Summer is comp time for all the 60 hour weeks put in during the year. This summer is especially wonderful for two reasons. Number one, I'm not searching for a job and, I'll be teaching something I've taught before. Number two, Jason and I are buying a house! While we don't close until the middle of July, I'll be spending a lot of time packing, painting, and unpacking.

Summer is comp time for all the 60 hour weeks put in during the year.

My summer was off to a great start on Friday night. Our good friends Eric and Erin are moving to Arizona in a few short weeks. So my friend Lauren decided to have one last gathering for a while. She made pizzas, salad, and bread. It was all wonderful! A few of our other friends from high school came also. It was quite an interesting night. We played the Scene It movie edition, six against one. The one being Hannah, a film major from USC. We did end up beating her, but there was alcohol involved.

Me, Christine, Erin, Hannah, and Lauren

Saturday night was another eventful evening. We had a teacher end of the year party at Cathy's house. It wasn't a big crowd, but we had a lot of fun. I'm so thankful for the people I work with! They are all so much fun, and I can count on them for just about anything.

Indy 500

Yesterday, Jason and I added another item to our resume of being true Hoosiers. We attended the Indianapolis 500! It was quite an experience to say the least. We left Lafayette for the hour drive at 7:30 in the morning. Two hours and $20 later, we were parked in someone's front yard, just 5 blocks from the track. I think we were both impressed on the time we made. We made it to our seats about 11:00 and then the waiting began. We quickly realized how wonderful our seats were. We were on the top row (seriously, the top row!) and could see all of turns three and four as well as part of the front straight away.

Here is a view of the fourth turn, and part of the 500,000 people in attendance!

Are we good looking or what?!

At lap 113, it started to rain and didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon. We headed for the car, and actually didn't get too wet. After we were at home and dry, they did restart the race and made it to lap 165 before finally calling it. While it wasn't my favorite thing to attend, I did enjoy it. My day will be on Sunday when I see the Cubs play the Braves!!!! Can't wait!!!!

Birthday Girl

Yay! My design from Susie is done. I love it! I still have some work to do to make it my own, but this is a start.

So yesterday was my birthday. Only 24, nothing too special. A couple of my students made me cards. Jason came home with a pink rose and my cards. He is also getting the next TEN seasons of 7th Heaven for me on DVD. I can't wait!!! That should fill up my summer pretty good.
We went out to dinner last night with David and Cathy. I wanted to go somewhere I'd never been before. We ended up at Chumley's here in Lafayette. It was okay... glad I tried something new. Then, we rented Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and watched it at their house. Hopefully today Jason and I will go see Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

Here I am!!!

Yay! I'm a blogger :)

My mother-in-law decided to get a blog design for me for my birthday. It couldn't be a more perfect gift. Jason's cousin, Jenn, has a blog and it's really a lot of fun to read. Especially since she lives in Colorado.

So here I go at this...

It took me a little while to decide on a title. Finally, came up with "Lessons Learned." I guess the most obvious reason for that comes from the fact that I am a teacher. Teaching is my passion. I can't imagine myself in another career. As with anyone and their job, I do have those days when I question the wisdom behind my career choice. But the next day, as long as I go in with a smile on my face, I have 23 faces smiling back at me, glad to see me, and full of energy that is contagious. Then I'm positive I'm where I'm meant to be.

The other, and perhaps more significant, reason for the title is how I'm trying to look at my past. It's not a secret to many people that I had an unpleasant childhood for many reasons. Just recently have I began to face it and heal from it. Instead of being angry, hateful, and sad, I'm trying to find the positives that have come out of this uphill battle. Some days its tough and the memories flood in, but I know I'm a strong, determined person because of my experiences.
